What is Medically-Assisted Detox?
WHO IS FOR
Who Should Receive Medically-Assisted Detox?
- Alcohol: Abrupt cessation of heavy alcohol use can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as seizures, hallucinations, and delirium tremens (DTs), which can be life-threatening. Medically-assisted detox is often used to manage these symptoms safely.
- Opioids: Withdrawal from opioids can be highly uncomfortable and may not pose immediate life-threatening risks. However, medications such as buprenorphine, or naltrexone may be used to help manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
- Benzodiazepines: Abrupt discontinuation of benzodiazepines, commonly prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders, can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms, including seizures. Medically-assisted detox is often necessary to taper individuals off these medications safely.
- Stimulants: Withdrawal from stimulants like cocaine or methamphetamine may not pose immediate life-threatening risks, but it can be challenging due to depressive symptoms and intense cravings. Medically-assisted detox may be used to manage these symptoms.
