The presence of substance abuse is prevalent in those who have personality disorders. There are many different types of personality disorders, and they all come with their own symptoms, which can be difficult to deal with on a daily basis, leading many individuals to become involved with drugs or alcohol. While mind-altering substances like drugs and alcohol can provide a temporary reprieve from the symptoms of a personality disorder, when consumed consistently over time, these substances can actually make symptoms of personality disorders much more severe. Unfortunately, by that time, most people are already addicted to the substance, making it difficult for them to quit ingesting it. When this happens, treatment from an addiction recovery program can help. Dual-diagnosis treatment centers are well-equipped to address both instances of addiction and mental health conditions such as personality disorders. These programs, like the ones here at First Steps Recovery, help clients to overcome their addiction and treat the underlying cause of their dependence on drugs or alcohol. While personality disorders can be worsened by drug or alcohol addiction, dual-diagnosis recovery programs are able to help clients move forward with their lives.
